Builders’ merchants who attended the Lord Mayor’s show on Saturday with their float certainly got their message across loud and clear. Will Britain get building now?

On Saturday 9th November, London celebrated the appointment of the new Lord Mayor of London at the Lord Mayor’s Show, and this year, the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants (WcoBM) starred in the show with their very own float. The float aimed to promote builders’ merchants and their services through the ages by displaying the company’s new strapline: ‘Supplying Britain’s Building Needs’ on banners, vehicles and giveaways and was even caught on camera on the BBC.

There were six vehicles in the float show, including a Handcart vira 1813, a Ridgeons’ Dray drawn by two Suffolk Punch horses and a brand new Lawsons’ flat-bed to represent how builders’ merchants have progressed. Marching alongside the vehicles were 30 liverymen all in long brown ‘Arkwright’ work coats with flat caps and pencils tucked behind their ears, as well as 28 sponsors in a range of costumes to represent popular building materials. Waiting in North Stand and cheering on the procession were over 150 builders’ merchant liverymen, freemen and guests, all wearing bright yellow hard hats and waving yellow rulers in support.

The day was a great success and worked well to get the ‘Get Britain Building’ message across. Builders’ merchants are so often overlooked as the source behind so many fantastic projects, so it was encouraging that so many people turned up to support them. Although the day worked well as a chance to promote their businesses and the industry, it was also a chance to celebrate the service that builders’ merchants provide.
