Background

Gould’s Timber Products are timber merchants based in County Cavan. They’ve been selling high quality timber products for over half a century. Gould’s Timber Products is a family-owned business that has spanned three generations of the Gould family. Current owner Andrew Gould added a new arm to the business in the 1990s, expanding into high quality outdoor furniture products. The company’s diversification has ensured its continued success throughout the past two decades, with Gould’s core values remaining intact despite the many changes the sector has undergone in recent years. The company sells to both retail and the trade, and plays a strong role in the local community.

The problem

Gould’s Timber Products had been using a generic accounts software package to assist them with managing transactions and various databases. However, this basic software was unsatisfactory in several ways. Andrew Gould decided that it was time to find software that had more functions, in order to support the company’s continued growth. Andrew told us: ‘the main reason we implemented Trader was for the stock control element, and also for the ability to trade with our customers in a more user-friendly manner.'

Trader

After much deliberation, Gould’s Timber Products switched to Trader at the end of May 2014, and the software is now used by four members of staff on a daily basis. The stock control functions lived up to Andrew’s expectations, particularly the ability to carry out accurate and quick cyclical stock checks and track remaining stock levels of popular products. Andrew also noticed a great deal of improvement when dealing with customer accounts. He also singled out a specific supply side benefit: ‘the invoice matching function is great – it’s made us more aware of how valuable purchases orders are.’

Despite having used Trader for only six months, Andrew told us he would have no hesitation in recommending Trader to other timber merchants and hardware stores.
